At the 2009 ESOMAR Congress, we cooperated with John Kearon of Brainjuicer to produce two engaging and informative interviews with Industry thought leaders to discuss the future of Market Research and attracting talent to our Industry. See how these MR decision makers envision the development of research in the coming decade and listen to their views on how to make MR a great career investment. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list....... The move from transactional to relational research is at the forefront of change in the market research industry. Technological advancements, societal changes and the current economic crisis are creating new dynamics and challenges to the "traditional" wisdom of market research and marketing. There is an increasing emphasis on the need to continually seek and demonstrate new value propositions. As we enter a new decade, we as an industry m...... [read more]

ESOMAR Congress Team posted Congress Artwork Auction
For the ESOMAR Congress 2009, we wanted to take our theme of creativity and give our attendees a chance to be involved in the creation of something unique to Congress. With this in mind ESOMAR secured the services of 3 very talented and very different young artists from the UK. Each concentrated on one of Congress themes and produced a piece or body of work that reflects that premise. Delegates at Congress were also given the opportunity to b...... [read more]

On the Thursday afternoon I am leading a one hour master class looking at the super hot topic of online research communities. I already have a mass of ideas that I want to share with the group, but I would love to hear what other people think we should be covering. Please use this space to express your views on what is happening, the threats and opportunities, and what we should be discussing.
Kalyan Karmakar: I feel that blogs could have an influence on local, small players too. I am an avid blogger on food and there's a lot of chatter on local restaurants. Blogs tend to enjoy high credibility once readers feel comfortable and confident about the writer. While Big Corps would look at blog scans, it could be worthwile for local entrenpreneurs to understand this medium too
Tom De Ruyck: It would be interesting to take a look at the differences between listening to and engaging in natural conversations that take just place on the internet (about brands, products and topics) & research communities. What can we learn without asing questions and what not? And for which topics do we need to join existing platforms like Facebook/Twitter to engage with consumers (because they are already there(!))? Looking forward to the session!!
Ray Poynter: Hi Tom, time did not allow us to get to this topic, but it is a good point, but wider than just communities. I feel that in all research projects the steps should be: 1) what do we already know (where we is both the client and the agency) 2) what can we find out easily, or for free (which includes browsing the net) 3) what is the best way to found out the missing pieces or to test what we think we have found out.

How much of an impact is Mobile research likely to have? Is it going to go the Online way? (This is specific to conducting surveys using Mobile phones). Second part - With specific reference to the developing countries, especially those that are jumping/short-circuiting the learning curve, where and how is mobile research going to affect the research world?
Robert de Bruyn: Well, certain developing world nations are ahead of the curve on mobile applications such as mobile banking in South Africa as a result of limited internet penetration. Following this; perhaps we will be looking to these nations and regions to pioneer mobile research?
